What Will We Do in Heaven? A Biblical Look at Our Eternal Hope

For many believers, heaven is a source of comfort, anticipation, and curiosity. We imagine the beauty, the joy, and the reunions—but what does the Bible actually say about what we will do in heaven? Pastor Mike Sanders of The Open Door Church has been teaching on this very topic, exploring Revelation 21 and related passages to give Christians a clear, hope-filled picture of eternity.

Drawing from Scripture, we learn that heaven is not a place of passive existence, but a vibrant, joyful, purposeful life with God.

Whether you’re new in your faith or have been following Christ for decades, understanding what awaits us in eternity strengthens us for the challenges of today. As Pastor Mike says, “Believers focus on heaven not as a reprieve from real life, but to gain strength for real life.” Episode 2023 (2025-Dec-28

Let’s look at five biblical truths about what believers will experience and do in heaven.

1. We Will Revel in God’s Presence and Worship Him Fully

The most extraordinary reality of heaven is God’s presence. Revelation 21:3 declares that God will dwell with His people—a truth repeated multiple times to emphasize its glory.

Pastor Mike explains that while God is with us now through His Spirit, the manifested presence of God will be far greater in eternity. There will be no sin, no distractions, no limitations to cloud our worship. Our joy will be complete.

He points to Psalm 16:11, which promises that in God’s presence there is “fullness of joy… and pleasures forevermore.”

In heaven:

  • Worship will not be boring—it will be the most fulfilling experience of our existence.
  • Every sense, every thought, every affection will be capable of delighting in God.
  • We will finally experience what our hearts were created for: unbroken communion with our Creator.

As Pastor Mike teaches, even our greatest moments of worship on earth only hint at what is to come.

2. We Will Experience Joyful Rest—Not Idleness, but Relief

Many imagine “rest” in heaven as inactivity, but Scripture paints a different picture. Revelation 14:13 says believers will “rest from their labors”—a rest not from activity, but from the burden of:

  • Suffering
  • Temptation
  • Grief
  • Physical limitations
  • The spiritual battle of daily life

Pastor Mike explains:

“It does not mean you’re going to sit on a cloud and sleep all day. It means the believer will be relieved from the burdens, afflictions, and sorrows of life.”

Heaven is not escapism—it is the completion of our spiritual journey, the end of the struggle, and the beginning of perfect joy. Every tear will be wiped away, and “the former things will pass away” (Revelation 21:4).

In heaven, rest means:

  • No more weariness
  • No more emotional heaviness
  • No more spiritual warfare
  • No more grief

It is rest rooted in the presence and victory of Christ.

3. We Will Have New, Glorified Bodies Suited for Real Activity

One of the most hope-filled truths is that God will give believers new physical bodies. Philippians 3:21 says our earthly bodies will be transformed to be like Christ’s glorious body.

Pastor Mike clarifies:

  • At death, our soul and spirit go immediately to be with the Lord.
  • Our resurrected bodies are received at Christ’s return.
  • In the new heaven and new earth, believers will have physical bodies made for activity, joy, and service.

He reminds us that God would not give us perfected bodies if they were not meant for meaningful use. In heaven, believers will enjoy physical activities without pain, fatigue, or aging—what a promise!

4. We Will Enjoy Fellowship and Social Interaction

Heaven will be filled with relationships—both old and new. Pastor Mike emphasizes that life is about relationships, and heaven will be too.

He teaches:

  • We will recognize one another (“we will be known as we are known”).
  • We will worship together in perfect unity.
  • We will fellowship without misunderstanding, conflict, or emotional wounds.
  • Our reunions with loved ones in Christ will be overflowing with joy.

Heaven is a place where love is perfected, community is sweet, and relationships are restored.

As Pastor Mike says:

“Your sorrow will be turned into joy… and the depth of your sorrow will manifest into heights of joy unspeakable.”

5. We Will Serve God with Purpose and Responsibility

Heaven is not passive. Believers will be active, purposeful, and fulfilled—serving God joyfully.

Revelation 7:15 says believers “serve Him day and night,” not in drudgery, but in joy. Pastor Mike explains that:

  • God will give believers responsibilities in the new heaven and new earth.
  • Our gifts, skills, and abilities—refined and perfected—will be used to glorify God forever.
  • The things we love doing now (without sin or strain) will still matter then.

As he puts it:

“Imagine living life for God at its height… no sin, no sorrow, no suffering. You will worship Him, serve Him, and love others—interrupted by nothing.”

Heaven is not the end of meaningful life—it is the beginning of the most meaningful living we will ever know.

The Most Important Question: Will You Be There?

Pastor Mike closes his message with a vital reminder: Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people.

Entrance into heaven does not come through good works, personal effort, or religious rituals. Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by Me.”

Salvation is received by:

  • Repenting of sin
  • Believing in Jesus Christ
  • Trusting in His death and resurrection
  • Calling upon Him in faith

As Pastor Mike says:

“Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Eternal life begins the moment you trust Christ—and continues forever in His presence.

Conclusion

Heaven is more real, more active, and more joyful than we often imagine. It is the fulfillment of every longing we have: to know God, to be with those we love in Christ, to experience peace, purpose, and unbroken joy.

Understanding heaven doesn’t just comfort us about the future—it strengthens us for today. It reminds us that this world is not our home, and that Christ has prepared a place where everything broken will be made new.
