The world can feel out of control.
Nations face conflict. Culture continues to change. Families experience uncertainty. Many people look at the future and wonder what will happen next.
But the Bible reminds us of a truth that should give every believer hope:
God is in control.
Isaiah 4 gives us a powerful picture of God’s sovereignty and His plan for the future. After the warnings and judgment described in Isaiah 3, the prophet Isaiah turns our attention toward hope. He reminds God’s people that judgment will not have the final word.
God has a plan. Jesus Christ will reign. Sin will not win.
What Is Happening in Isaiah Chapter 4?
To understand Isaiah 4, we need to look at the chapters surrounding it.
Isaiah often moves between warnings about Israel’s present condition and prophecies about the future. In Isaiah 3, the prophet describes God’s judgment on a nation that had turned away from Him.
The chapter is serious. It exposes the consequences of pride, rebellion, and rejection of God’s truth.
Then Isaiah 4 changes direction.
Isaiah writes about a future day of restoration, righteousness, and hope. God reminds His people that even when judgment comes, He has not lost control.
The same truth applies to us today.
God is in control in the valley and on the mountaintop. He remains sovereign during difficult seasons and joyful seasons. Nothing happening in our world has caught God by surprise.
What Does “In That Day” Mean in Isaiah 4?
Isaiah 4:2 begins with the phrase:
“In that day…”
What day is Isaiah talking about?
Throughout the book of Isaiah, the prophet often uses this phrase when pointing toward future events and the fulfillment of God’s plan. Isaiah is helping God’s people look beyond their present circumstances.
History is not random.
God controls the times and seasons. He knows the beginning and the end. The events of this world are moving toward the fulfillment of His ultimate plan.
That does not mean every event is good. Sin remains present in our world, and people still make sinful choices.
But even in a broken world, God remains sovereign.
Who Is the Branch of the Lord in Isaiah 4?
Isaiah 4:2 says:
“In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious.”
The Branch of the Lord points to Jesus Christ.
Throughout Scripture, the prophets connect the coming Messiah to the family line of David. Jeremiah describes a righteous Branch who will come from David’s lineage and reign as King.
Jesus Christ fulfilled those promises.
He came the first time as the Lamb of God who gave His life for our sins. He died on the cross so sinners could receive forgiveness and eternal life through faith in Him.
But the Bible also teaches that Jesus will come again.
When He returns, Christ will reign as King.
Will Jesus Christ Reign as King?
Yes. The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ will rule and reign.
Isaiah describes the Branch of the Lord as “beautiful and glorious.” There is coming a day when Christ will receive the honor and glory He deserves before the entire world.
First Corinthians 15:25 says:
“For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.”
Jesus came the first time in humility. He experienced rejection, false accusations, suffering, and the cross.
But Christ will return in victory.
The kingdoms of this world are temporary. Leaders come and go. Nations rise and fall.
Jesus Christ is the eternal King.
What Is the Millennial Kingdom in the Bible?
Isaiah’s prophecy points toward the future reign of Jesus Christ.
The Millennial Kingdom refers to the thousand-year reign of Christ described in biblical prophecy. During this future kingdom, Jesus will rule with righteousness and justice.
The world we live in today is deeply affected by sin.
We see conflict.
We experience pain.
We watch injustice.
We feel the effects of a broken creation.
But the Bible points believers toward a better day.
Christ will reign. Righteousness will be exalted. God’s blessings will be evident throughout the land.
Isaiah wants God’s people to look forward with hope.
Why Do Christians Still Struggle With Sin?
Some Christians become discouraged because they continue to struggle with temptation after trusting Jesus Christ.
The Bible helps us understand salvation through the penalty, power, and presence of sin.
When you trust Jesus Christ as your Savior, Christ delivers you from the penalty of sin. Jesus took the punishment for sin on the cross.
As you grow in your relationship with God, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God help you experience power over sin. Through God’s strength, you can learn to say no to temptation and yes to Christ.
However, believers still live in a world where the presence of sin remains.
That is why Christians still face temptation and spiritual battles.
But a day is coming when believers will finally be free from the presence of sin.
No more sin.
No more sorrow.
No more sadness.
Christ will be glorified, and God’s people will rejoice.
Does God Protect His People During Difficult Times?
Isaiah 4 also teaches us about God’s protection.
Isaiah speaks of those who remain in Zion and describes the Lord creating a covering, refuge, and shelter.
Throughout Scripture, we see that God preserves a remnant of people who trust Him.
Does that mean Christians will never experience difficulty?
No.
Believers may face hardship, persecution, grief, and uncertainty. God’s protection does not mean every situation will unfold exactly as we want.
It means our lives remain in His hands.
God is still working. God is still protecting His people. God is still accomplishing His purpose.
That is why Christians do not have to live in fear.
Can Christians Lose Their Salvation?
One of the greatest sources of hope for believers is knowing that salvation is secure in Jesus Christ.
Jesus says in John 10:28:
“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”
Jesus gives eternal life.
Not temporary life.
Not partial eternal life.
Eternal life.
The believer rests securely in the hands of Jesus Christ. John 10 also reminds us that no one can snatch God’s people from the Father’s hand.
Our confidence does not rest in our ability to hold onto God.
Our confidence rests in God’s ability to hold onto us.
Why Should Christians Have Hope When the World Feels Out of Control?
It is easy to become discouraged when we focus only on current events.
We see problems in our culture. We see conflict throughout the world. We may even experience personal struggles that leave us wondering what God is doing.
Isaiah reminds us to look beyond the present moment.
There is a greater day coming.
Jesus Christ will reign. God’s promises will be fulfilled. Sin will not have the final victory.
Christians should not live as people without hope.
Our hope rests in the promises of God.
How Should Christians Live Because God Is in Control?
Knowing that God is in control should change how we live.
First, be holy.
Live differently. Follow God’s Word. Let your life demonstrate the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
Second, be hopeful.
Difficult days may come, but God’s promises remain true. Do not allow fear to control your heart.
Third, be helpful.
Serve others. Encourage the church. Care for fellow believers. Share the gospel with those who need Jesus.
This is not the time for Christians to quit.
We cannot walk away from the mission God has given us because life becomes difficult or someone disappoints us.
We must stay engaged in the work of Christ.
Is God Really in Control of Your Future?
Isaiah 4 does more than teach us about prophecy.
It challenges us to trust God personally.
What are you worried about today?
Maybe you are concerned about your family. Maybe you are uncertain about your future. Perhaps you are discouraged by what you see happening in the world.
Remember this:
God has not lost control.
He was sovereign in Isaiah’s day. He is sovereign today. He will remain sovereign throughout eternity.
The question is whether you have placed your trust in Him.
If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, the Bible invites you to turn from your sin and believe in Him. Jesus died on the cross for your sins and rose again so you could receive forgiveness and eternal life.
Do not neglect the salvation Christ offers.
Why Does Isaiah 4 Give Christians Hope?
Isaiah 4 reminds us that God’s plan is greater than the problems we see today.
God controls history.
Jesus Christ will reign.
Sin will not win.
God’s people are secure in Him.
We may experience difficult seasons, but believers can continue moving forward with confidence because our future rests in the hands of God.
