When the Apostle Paul stood before crowds, councils, and kings in Acts 22 through 26, his mission was clear—defend the gospel of Jesus Christ. His unwavering testimony, rooted in personal transformation, provides a timeless model for every believer today.
The Power of a Testimony
Paul didn’t rely on theological debate or philosophical persuasion. He told his story—what his life was like before Christ, how he came to know Christ, and how Christ changed his life. That’s the pattern we’re encouraged to follow when sharing our faith:
- What was your life like before Christ?
Paul was religious but lost. Zealous for the law, yet blind to the truth. He persecuted Christians, believing he was doing God’s will. Many of us can relate. Whether our past was full of pride, pain, or simply self-reliance, we all need a Savior. - How did you realize you needed Christ?
For Paul, it was a dramatic encounter—a blinding light on the road to Damascus. For others, it may be tragedy, transition, or triumph that God uses to get our attention. God speaks to us in different ways, but the goal is always the same: to draw us to Himself. - How did you commit your life to Christ?
Paul responded with a surrendered heart, asking, “What shall I do, Lord?” He arose and obeyed. Today, salvation comes the same way: by calling upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, believing in His death and resurrection, and humbling our hearts before Him. - What difference has Christ made in your life?
After salvation, Paul’s life radically changed. He became a bold witness, facing opposition, persecution, and even death. But he never stopped proclaiming the hope of Christ.
God Uses Every Season
We are reminded that God often uses life’s hardships—tragedies, transitions, and even victories—to draw us closer. Whether it’s the loss of a spouse, the chaos of parenting, a job promotion, or a major move, God may be using your current season to grow your faith or prepare your heart.
Always Be Ready
1 Peter 3:15 calls believers to “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for the hope that is in you, with gentleness and respect.” That hope should overflow in our lives, causing others to ask what we have that they’re missing.
But our defense must be rooted in humility, not pride. As Pastor Mike warned, when we attack fellow believers, we’re attacking the very body of Christ. Jesus takes that personally. The church is His bride and His body—so we must be cautious, loving, and respectful, even in disagreement.
Trust God with the Results
Not everyone will respond the way we hope. Some, like the crowd in Acts 22, will reject the message outright. But our success isn’t based on results—it’s based on obedience. Paul was faithful even when the crowds shouted, “Away with such a fellow from the earth!” Just as Noah preached righteousness for 120 years without results, we are called to be faithful regardless of outcome.
Practical Steps to Defend the Gospel
- Tell God’s story through your story. Don’t be afraid to share your testimony—God will use it.
- Be intentional. Pastor Mike encouraged each of us to invite someone to breakfast or dinner and share what God has done in our lives.
- Welcome the unchurched into your home. Let them see the gospel in action through your words and lifestyle.
- Invite people to church. The invitation could be the first step in someone’s journey to Christ.
The Only Way to Heaven
At the heart of the gospel is this truth: the only way to heaven is by acknowledging you are a sinner, believing in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, and calling upon Him to forgive you. Religion, rituals, and good works can’t save. Only a relationship with Christ can.
God is pleading through us (2 Corinthians 5:19–20). We are His ambassadors. And in these uncertain times, when people are searching for answers, hope, and peace, our testimony may be the very thing God uses to draw them in.
So, Christian—defend the gospel. Share your story. And trust God with the results.
