What Will We Know in Heaven?

One of the most comforting questions believers often ask is, “Will I know my loved ones in heaven?” The Bible offers a beautiful answer to that question. In 1 Corinthians 13:12, the Apostle Paul writes, “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.”

This verse gives us hope that while our understanding on earth is limited, one day we will stand face-to-face with Christ and see clearly. Pastor Mike Sanders of The Open Door Church explored this truth in a recent Hope Worth Having message, walking through what the Bible says about what we will know in heaven—and how that knowledge brings peace, comfort, and purpose to our lives today.

1. Our Knowledge in Heaven Will Be Greater Than It Is Now

The Apostle Paul reminds us that our earthly knowledge is incomplete. We see only a small part of God’s vast plan—like looking into a fogged mirror. But in heaven, that clouded view will become crystal clear.

Heaven will be a place of perfect understanding. The limitations caused by sin, doubt, and confusion will no longer exist. Every believer will have a renewed mind and a glorified body, free from the effects of sin and time. Philippians 3:21 assures us that God “will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body.”

In other words, the sharpness, clarity, and perfection of our minds will be restored to what God originally intended. What a glorious transformation that will be!

2. We Will Never Be All-Knowing—Only God Is Omniscient

Even in heaven, we won’t know everything. Only God is all-knowing. Pastor Mike reminded us that in eternity, our understanding will always grow, but we will never be equal to God in knowledge.

That truth should comfort us—it means we’ll spend eternity continually discovering new depths of God’s love, grace, and wisdom. Heaven isn’t the end of learning; it’s the beginning of an endless journey of discovery in the presence of our Creator.

3. We Will Continue to Learn and Grow for Eternity

In heaven, our learning will never stop. Pastor Mike shared that our eternal state won’t be static—we’ll keep growing in knowledge, joy, and understanding forever.

Imagine asking questions directly to the Apostle Paul, Moses, or King David. Imagine listening as Jesus Himself explains the mysteries of creation and redemption. In heaven, learning will no longer be hindered by sin or fatigue. Our minds will be sharp, our hearts pure, and our curiosity fully satisfied in Christ.

We will learn more about:

  • The Person of God – His holiness, righteousness, and unfailing love will be revealed in ways we can’t imagine on earth.
  • The Plan of God – We will finally understand how every trial, loss, and unanswered prayer fit into His perfect design.
  • The Power of God – We will experience His power not just as an outside force, but as a living reality that fills and sustains us eternally.

4. We Will Remember—But Without Pain

One of the most touching parts of Pastor Mike’s message centered on memory. Will we remember our earthly lives in heaven? The answer is yes—but without sorrow or regret.

Revelation 21:4 says, “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any pain.” That doesn’t mean we will forget our lives—it means the pain and brokenness of this world will no longer have power over us.

Our memories will be redeemed. We will remember God’s goodness, His faithfulness, and the ways He brought us through every hardship. But sorrow, guilt, and grief will be replaced with joy and thanksgiving.

5. We Will Recognize Our Loved Ones in Heaven

Perhaps the most heartwarming truth is this: we will know one another in heaven. Just as we recognize our loved ones on earth, we will recognize them in eternity—but even more clearly.

Scripture gives us examples:

  • The disciples recognized Jesus after His resurrection (Luke 24).
  • Moses and Elijah were recognized by Peter, James, and John at the Transfiguration (Luke 9).
  • The rich man and Lazarus recognized each other after death (Luke 16).

Our resurrected bodies will be real and recognizable, yet glorified. The relationships we cherished in Christ will continue, without sin, offense, or separation. Pastor Mike beautifully put it: “You will not know less in heaven than you know on earth—you will know more.”

Seeing Face-to-Face with Christ

One day, we will stand before our Savior and see Him face-to-face. Every question, every hurt, and every mystery will be made clear. In that moment, faith will give way to sight, and we will know—fully and perfectly—as we are known.

Until then, we walk by faith, holding fast to the promise that heaven is real, our loved ones in Christ are alive and well, and God’s plan is unfolding perfectly.

As Pastor Mike reminds us, “It’s not about us—it’s about Jesus.” Let us live each day with that eternal perspective, sharing His hope with others and growing in our anticipation of the day when we’ll see Him as He is.
