In life, it’s easy to be grateful when everything goes right. But what about when things fall apart—when circumstances disappoint, when people let you down, or when faith feels weak? In Pastor Mike Sanders’ message, “Be Thankful Anyway,” we are reminded that true gratitude isn’t based on what’s happening around us—it’s rooted in the unshakable grace and faithfulness of God.
Drawing from 1 Corinthians 1:4–9, Pastor Mike teaches that no matter where we find ourselves, we have countless reasons to give thanks.
1. Be Thankful for God’s Grace
The foundation of our thankfulness is God’s grace. Salvation is not a transaction or something we earn through good works—it is a free gift through Jesus Christ.
Many people live in fear of losing that gift, believing one mistake could separate them from God. But Scripture tells us otherwise:
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1
Our salvation is secure because it’s rooted in a covenant between the Father and the Son—not in our performance. Once we accept Christ by faith, we are confirmed, settled, and established in His grace. Even when we fall short, God’s promise stands firm.
That’s why, as Pastor Mike says, we can “be thankful anyway.” Grace cannot coexist with obligation or merit—it’s given freely so that all the glory goes to God alone.
2. Be Thankful for God’s Gifts
In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul gave thanks that believers were “enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge.” (1 Corinthians 1:5)
Every believer has been gifted by God—not only pastors or leaders, but every person who puts their faith in Christ. Some are gifted to teach, others to serve, to encourage, or to give. Even when we don’t always use our gifts perfectly, the gifts themselves are evidence of God’s grace working in us.
At The Open Door Church, Pastor Mike reminds us that if you’ve been given a gift, use it. Be that “squeaky wheel” who says, “I want to serve, I want to make a difference.” When we use our spiritual gifts, the church grows stronger and the community experiences God’s love through us.
3. Be Thankful for God’s Work in Others
Sometimes it’s difficult to be thankful for people who frustrate or disappoint us. But Paul modeled a different attitude—he was thankful for the Corinthians despite their flaws.
We are called to do the same. Even when our loved ones drift from God, we can still give thanks for the testimony of Christ that was once confirmed in them. We can trust that He who began a good work will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6).
Instead of criticism or frustration, we can affirm the faith that God planted and pray for His continued work in their hearts. Gratitude for others keeps our hearts soft and our faith strong.
4. Be Thankful for the Promise of Christ’s Return
The Bible reminds us that Jesus is coming again—and His return is nearer than ever.
Paul urged believers to live with expectation, “eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 1:7)
When we remember that Christ could return at any moment, our priorities shift. We live with urgency, purpose, and hope. We serve, love, and share the gospel—not out of fear, but because we want others to know the same saving grace we’ve received.
As Pastor Mike puts it, “Jump out of the slow lane and serve God until He promotes you to heaven.”
5. Be Thankful for God’s Faithfulness
At the heart of the message is this truth: God is faithful.
People will fail us, circumstances will disappoint us, but God never will. He keeps His promises, sustains us through trials, and finishes what He starts.
Even when we face temptation, anger, or bitterness, God provides a way of escape. Through prayer and dependence on Him, we can rise above resentment and choose gratitude instead.
At Thanksgiving—and every day—we can thank God for His faithfulness in salvation, His protection from temptation, and His constant presence in our lives.
A Heart of Gratitude
Pastor Mike reminds us that being thankful isn’t just for the good times. It’s a habit of the heart that keeps us focused on what truly matters—God’s unchanging grace and faithfulness.
This week, choose to thank God anyway. Thank Him for the blessings, the challenges, the people, and even the imperfections in life that He uses to shape you into who you’re meant to be.
